At this distance we get little information except headlines of the American election, and, although our gut feeling has not been positive from the start. What happens if Ms Palin’s tunning mate succumbs to age or a disagreeing cup of coffee a few months into his term? Ms Palin for president? The mind boggles.

Thanks for sharing. Tell me Cheney’s influence did not impact policy during the Bush administation. And to use the overused, she would be “only a heartbeat away”.

Its true that VP’s don’t generally do that much but they can still strongly influence the president as well as the people who surround him. Its also true that many of Bush’s attacks on environmental legislation didn’t work, but he did manage quite a few laws that weakened current legislation (Clean Water Act, Healthy Forests, etc) as well as his most recent move circumventing the Endangered Species Act. It may be difficult to dismantle current legislation but damage has already been done by the current administration and a lot of little steps in that direction are essentially the same as one drastic change.

Vice-Presidents don’t really have a whole lot of power, however, so Palin would only really get to do some damage if she became President. Even then it’s difficult to dismantle environmental legislation just because you want to: ask Reagan or the Bushes. Palin is certainly no friend to the environment, but it’s McCain’s policies that we have to worry about…
