Red-breasted Merganser – Quinn’s Pond, ID

written by Alex Lamoreaux

A few days ago, Boise-birder Tom McCabe reported a female Red-breasted Merganser at Quinn's Pond here in Boise. Anna and I were nearby getting internet at a McDonald's, so we drove over to the pond to add this species to our state list. Red-breasted Mergansers are not that uncommon during migration in Idaho, but they are still my favorite merganser, and probably one of my favorite ducks, so I was very happy to be able to stop back by Quinn's Pond this afternoon and get some up-close shots of this wonderful bird!

We spotted a merganser duck with a bright scarlett red head ‘punk rocker mohalk’ on the east side of Boise
down a valley that lead to the Bonneville Point historical sight this winter. Very unusual and wonderful to see!
Also saw this June a gray headed mergaser in a pond by the Boise river.  I wonder if the red-headed ones are rare-
I can’t find a picture of one anywhere on the internet.
