Mystery Bird Quiz!

written by Alex Lamoreaux

We haven't had a mystery bird quiz here on Nemesis Bird for a while and so while Anna and I were out birding I purposely tried to take some photos of birds in strange angles that I could possibly use as a bird quiz, so the photo below is the best I could get. Please leave your guess as a comment on THIS post along with you name or you can email me directly at alexlamoreaux@verizon.net. Make sure you point out features that led you to the guess you are submitting, just telling me the species you think it is, without any explanation isn't as fun!

I’m with Drew – legs look too long to me for a Sanderling.  Definitely looks like a phalarope to me – and I’d say Wilson’s since they should be more common in Idaho this time of year, and the white-fringing on the scapulars looks good too.

I’m going for willet.  Thick gray legs, white undertail coverts, it looks like there could be some faint barring on the sides and flanks.  It also looks like the primaries are blackish and I’m not seeing in rufous coloring on the wings.  Maybe I’m seeing what I want to see though.
