Library Black-backed Woodpeckers Update

written by Alex Lamoreaux

I posted last week about a pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers that Anna and I found in the parking lot of the Island Park Public Library. This week, the woodpeckers are hard at work excavating their nest-cavity in a Lodgepole Pine right next to the parking lot. They are sharing the tree with a pair of Tree Swallows, although the swallows don't seem to appreciate the company. Below are a few photos of the female preparing the cavity.

Ahh! Black-backed Woodpeckers have become a nemesis bird for me, evading me in at least 4 different states for the past few years, including Idaho, and you found some in a library parking lot?!?! What a great find, and it always goes to show, take your binos everywhere!
