Sage Thrasher – Photo Study

written by Alex Lamoreaux

One of the birds that was on my "Most Wanted" list before coming to Idaho was the Sage Thrasher. Luckily, after being here in Idaho for over 3 months, I have been able to see quite a few, especially this past week! I think they are a really awesome bird, and for me, are so iconic of sagebrush flatlands. All of the times I have seen one they were at quite a distance, and so didn't allow for a decent photo. Or they were close but then took off running before I could get a photo. Luckily a few days ago I was able to sit very close to one as it gathered food for its chicks and I took the photos below. I hope you enjoy these photos of this beautiful bird that I think is a little taken-for-granted here in Idaho.

A good point about sagebrush birds sometimes being taken for granted (and I agree that ‘our’ thrashers are quite cool).  When I first moved out west and worked in sagebrush environments, I thought there were so many Brewer’s Sparrows and Sage Thrashers that there could never be any reason for concern over their populations.  Truth is, they are really common in high-quality habitat but we’ve lost so much habitat to fire and various other forms of habitat loss/degradation that, along with sage-grouse, both species are actually considered “at risk” by most agencies with management responsibility for them (i.e., BLM, US Fish & Wildlife, and many state agencies like Idaho Fish & Game).  Thus, even more reason to appreciate these desert songsters!

Great shots of the Sage Thrasher Alex!  I got this as a life bird just a couple of moths ago.  It is a beautiful bird with a beautiful song.  My favorite photo is the third one, among the flowers with the worm.  Isn’t it funny how people take their local birds for granted sometimes?

    Excellent captures Alex. Great poses.
I agree with Larry; we often take our local, and even commoner birds, for granted.

Thank you.  I grew up in Idaho but never bird watched until I left.  That one is on my list to see!
