Snowy Owl at Merrill Creek Reservoir, NJ

written by Alex Lamoreaux

On November 8th, Ray Richkus spotted a Snowy Owl while fishing in Merrill Creek Reservoir, Warren County, New Jersey. Word quickly spread, and many birders were able to see the bird the next day. Four of my friends and I decided to chase the owl, and left State College at 5:00am and made it to the reservoir by 8:30am. Some park employees let us take a quick look at the owl through their spotting scope from across the reservoir, and then we walked around to get a better, closer look. For the entire time we were watching the owl (two hours) it did not move from where it was sitting. The owl was perched on the ground along the shoreline and hunkered down between large pieces of driftwood. Occasionally the owl would sit upright and alert and look around, or glance up at crows flying overhead, but generally the owl just sat still with its eyes closed, resting. There appears to be a bit of blood smeared on the right side of the owl's face, which hopefully indicates it made a kill, but no one has actually see it with prey yet. People have, however, seen it flying along the shoreline seemingly hunting. Based on plumage characteristics, it has been decided the bird is most likely a juvenile female.

What an odd place to see a Snowy Owl. Sounds like it could be a good year for them down here with lots being seen in Maine already. Hopefully central PA gets one.

Don’t take anything into the owl sitting on the ground that is what snowy owls do. It is curious being this far south? If we were at the end of a really bad winter I could maybe see one coming farther down south. She must have taken a wrong turn. It is also good that she was moving around and alert to her surrounding, which is not sick or injured owl activity. Keep us posted. She is a beauty.

I saw this owl today! A nice man was at the base of the large dam as I was hiking down. He had a huge camera lense set up and allowed me to look through. There was the beautiful snowy owl perched between some rocks on the dam. The man said he was watching the owl for several hours. As I climbed the wooded side of the dam trail, a huge fox was on the trail headed in the direction of the snowy owl. The fox saw me and went the other way. I also thought I saw the owl a week before that in the trees half way up the mountain near the same dam but could not verify that at the time. Today is 3/15/2012. I saw the owl about 2:15pm.
