Ode to Butterbutts - Cape May Autumn Birding Festival by Alex Lamoreaux

The most abundant landbird species in Cape May during the Autumn Birding Festival was, of course, the Yellow-rumped Warbler. There were thousands. The morning flight counters tallied thousands flying back into Cape May on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. And that’s in addition to the thousands already in Cape May each day that didn’t pass it off the night before, or drifted down the coast to end up at the Cape each day. Every bit of vegetation, and wherever you scan across the sky, there are sure to be a few Butterbutts chasing each other (or some other bird), eating something, or happily hopping around. This post is simply a compilation of some of the MANY Yellow-rumped Warblers that I saw during my weekend at the festival….
