The Guardabaranco, or Turquoise-browed Motmot, is the national bird of both Nicaragua and El Salvador. This was one of the most common species we encountered on bird surveys on bird-friendly, shade-grown coffee farms we surveyed in San Juan del Rio Coco, a community that had embraced the organic, fair trade coffee movement.
The Turquoise-browed Motmot has a distinctive call that is reminiscent of a train whistle and the coffee farmers tell us they call more when rain is coming.
